illustration friday: scale
Here's my submission for Illustration Friday's theme of "scale"
This is a piece that I created for another project with another theme(my new book coming out in late 2008!) But I think this piece works for IF. You can play musical scales on a violin. This is actually a portrait of myself as a little girl. I was a very bad violin player. My interest didn't last long, only long enough to make it to the first recital where I ended up tangling the bow with the violin and making a big mess!
Bonus points to anyone who can guess what the song is on the black board behind me :)

This has to be one of my favorites of yours! The child you were predicts accurately the wonderful adult you have become.
Great idea! I thought about music scales. Might still try something along those lines. Your work is always great!
Claudine, this is beautiful and I actually thought, "I wonder if that is little Claudine ? " and I was right. The color scheme is lovely and you have captured the relaxation in the bow hand...the ease with which violinists hold the bow. Very well done....another beauty.
It's "Row Row Row Your Boat". Right? When I saw this picture I immediately let out a sigh that chased away all the stresses of the day. What a lovely drawing. Such beauty and grace. Does the identity of the little girl have anything to do with that? That's a rhetorical question.
This is utterly adorable! But I have to ask, did you really wear an apron while you played the violin?!
I played violin as a child too! My siblings used to tell me it sounded like I was killing cats whenever I practiced. Nice & supportive huh?
this is wonderful claudine! i love the colors and everything about it. and i'm really happy to know you're going to have another book!
I thought that little violinist looked familiar! Both my kids played violin but I didn't think of musical scales for this theme...'doh! Guess after hearing them for years, I just wanted to forget.
Nice work, as usual. And thanks for the wax collage video...we've been using it in the classroom and it's a huge hit!

Love this piece! What a cutie you were/are!...I often think, when I see your pieces, how fun it must be to have your ability to draw. I'm so happy for you that you were blessed in that way!
Oh, and I was trying to sight read the musical notes (played the flute when I was a kid)but couldn't tell the song. (A lot of years out of practice.) But I went back to it after a comment was left by Cindy that it was Row Row Row Your Boat, and I think she's right!...I don't suppose you get any points by just agreeing with someone else's answer, huh???
hi claudine! i just found you from the switchboards.. i love your work and your blog is just as beautiful!
i always wanted to play the violin...
the notes dancing on the chalkboard background are especially wonderful!
best,
jenny

I like the color blocking that is happening with the composition. I like the apron... even though I've never ever worn one myself. :)
Claudine - This is one of my favorite pieces of yours. Everything about it works! Thanks for your nice comment on mine, it means a lot to me, coming from you. I have one of your books..to me you are like a rockstar!
Claudine - your work is truly amazing! Thank you for your comments on my blog. I posted your video from the Martha Stewart show on my blog. I really love the piece for SCALE...the colors, the expression of the little girl - it all works so well!
Do you remember practicing the violin with me while I practiced cello?!?! I had the hardest time trying to lug that cello around! love, Carrie
I love the way you mix photo with drawing. This piece is beautiful. Wonderful harmonious cool colours in the background, and the violins warm contrast. Beautiful:)
